Reading distances honestly

California distances deceive newcomers. The Bay Area cluster sits within two hours of San Francisco, but Tahoe and Yosemite are half day drives that deserve dawn starts, the far north is a proper road trip, and the deserts sit closer to Las Vegas than to the Bay. When two pins look neighborly on the map, check the guide's drive time before promising anyone a quick outing; mountain roads and coastal curves stretch map miles into real hours.

How to use this page: pick a region that fits your available time: Bay Area for a day, Central Coast or Tahoe for a weekend, the desert for a winter escape, then open the guides and build your plan.
