Best mountain towns in California

A great mountain town does two jobs: launches your adventures by day and feeds your stories by night. California's best manage both with personality to spare. Here's the shortlist, compared by what actually differs, seasons, budget gravity, and the adventure right out the door.

The Sierra heavyweights

• Truckee: the complete package: a historic downtown (rail town bones, good restaurants) ten minutes from Tahoe's north shore and the Donner Summit playgrounds. Four full seasons. The catch: everyone knows, and prices show it.
• South Lake Tahoe: the energy option: biggest lodging supply, casino nightlife across the state line, Emerald Bay up the road. Less charm, more everything else.

• Big Bear Lake: SoCal's four season answer: lake summers, ski winters, cabin culture, two hours from LA. The Village keeps it walkable; holiday weekends keep it humble.
• Idyllwild: the artsy alternative: no lake, no lifts, just pines, crags (Tahquitz rock), galleries, and a town so relaxed it once elected a golden retriever mayor. For hikers and porch sitters.
